Why doesn't my notebook screen turn on when I take it out of standby?

I have a dell notebook with xp. When I take it out of standby by opening up the notebook or moving the mouse, the screen does not turn on. It stays dark just as it was in standby, but the system acknowleges that it has been turned on. Also, before it goes to the screensaver, the screen starts to fade or it turns grey. Could anyone tell me whats wrong with it or is it necessary to take it in to dell? Is this something I can fix in settings?

Well when you turn screen saver one or something the screen tends to fade.

But what it sounds like it a HDD problem.

If you open your control panel>power options
then under the power schemes tab if it has turn hard disks off and it has a time, switch it to NEVER, i recommend the same for system standby

that should fix it but you never know with computers

hmmm...Did you try pressing the power button?
It sound like you have to re-start every time you open it. If not, the re-start!
You can keep it from going into standby- the fastest way it to right-click on the desktop, click properties, and got to power settings (or something like that, it's a button somewhere under the screen saver tab)
