I am a college student. What is a good laptop for me to buy?

Yes, and you pay too much for non-upgradeable hardware. Then your school's IT department might only offer limited Mac support.

In short, what I'm saying is to check your school's PC requirements. Some schools are Mac friendly, while others require you to have programs that do not run on Macs. Macs will also cost more than a comparable PC.

In regards to the one poster about XP Home, your school might require XP Pro. Dell also offers that; standard on most business models (Lattitudes, Vostro, etc).

Another thing to check into is if your school has a student computer purchase program. My school offers reduced prices for Macs and Dells. The base configurations offered are what the school requires. You can then customize the system to higher specs if you'd like.

But if you just need a computer for word processing and internet surfing, get a entry level PC with 1gb of RAM (XP) or 2gb of RAM (Vista). Processing power and harddrive size probably won't matter much to you for those activities.
Whatever you do, don't buy a Vista PC with 512mb of RAM, unless you're planning to upgrade the RAM. It's instant FAIL, since Vista's min req is 512mb. Then running anything more will just make your computer slow.

depends on what specs you want but my opinion i would say Dell. the have a wide range of specs for decent money and you can still order it with XP home, while with other companies are selling vist or XP pro for an extra 100.00

I've been researching this for my son and we've decided on a HP Pavilion dv9700t for the inexpensive (but spec'd out pretty good) laptop and for the power laptop, a Sager NP9262 (for when he has the money to spend).
