I need some advice on getting higher on google.?

I have built a website that is competing to get higher up on Google. The other website i am competing with is practically a white page with a couple of lines of text on and their HTML has no META tags in at all. My pages are full of content relating to the subject and i have lines of META objects and still am 6 places behind them why is this happening? What can I do to get higher on Google?

Note that Google doesn't take meta tags into account when ranking your site. This is because it can be abuse.

Get links to your site with your keywords within the link text. Though if you want any of the link value passed onto your site the link mustn't contain the nofollow attribute.

Get you keywords nearer the top of your page and make use of header tags but don't keyword gram.

Create interesting content. Add some to external sites with a link and put the rest on your site.

You're six places behind them for what? Are you certain that the keywords you're searching on are actually being used by enough people that it would be valuable to rank better on that search, or is it just a matter of personal pride?

I'm sure there are some searches for which your site comes up above the other one. You should study your traffic and determine your goals based on that.
