Is Google reading my gmail?

I sent to someone an e mail in my gmail account to ask them what a word meant. It was in a foreign language. They wrote back defining the word. To the left of this was about 5 or so advertisements from Google and all had to do exactly with this word.

Hmmm? wouldn't you say that Google is 'reading' my e mails that I are in my gmail account?

the computer reads words such as 'football' and puts fooball ads on your page.

why?

Of course they are, and they read your question on here too. Expect an answer soon...

It's adSense technology. It may be neat to some, but it's an invasion of privacy on the other hand.

Even 'if' Google isn't directly reading your e-mail, it's still picking up bits and words of info. about you, that they let advertisers have access to. Probably, somewhere in Google servers, there's a folder with your account on it, and what keywords you put up a lot. That's the area where advertisers can push ads to you.

I saw this interesting movie about how Google is really invading our privacy and you should take a look : http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=28a5...

Or the direct site from the movie : http://masterplanthemovie.com/

No you sent the orginal to them. I am pretty sure they dont care about reading anyones email.

No, the adverts that appear scan what is in the e-mail and will pick adverts with key words in that e-mail.

Nothing to do with reading your account, don't worry. They will appear on lots of your e-mails where they find key content.

They do this as they want to show you adverts relevant to you, and take the chance that what is in an e-mail you sent or received is a subject that interests you. Google receives money every time you click on an advert so it makes sense for them to invent a system where you only see adverts that apply to you.

They're not reading your mail, just using the adsense system to pick words out and show adverts.

yeah nothing to worry about, the google "spiders" just pick up on keywords in your email and display ads next to them that are relative or at least they think to what your are talking about. pretty smart eh?
