Need a Google Expert?

Question on Google: I have several pages that have reached position 1 on the google search pages. Is there any way I can use those pages to get my others pages higher up on search. Meaning is there anything I can add, or change to the no. 1 pages that would impact other pages that are currently in a lower search position. For instance, link the no. 1 pages to the other pages?

Its difficult but not impossible.

First of all, you need to make sure the pages you want to rank first has the keyword that you want them to rank for in the content - it follows of course that these pages need to have plenty of relevant content on them.

Other issues you can look at include your page title, links in your text, headings on the page (the use of <h1> tags in the code), have alt attributes in any images on the page.

Take a look at adding nofollow attributes to your links - especially those leading to less important pages you don't want to rank for (terms & conditions, contact details etc) - this can help strengthen the PR (pagerank) of the other pages (please note that PR doesn't affect your ranking directly, but does influence how often your pages get indexed)

Don't try and spam the search engines by putting tons of keywords in the page's meta tags, putting your keywords all over the page (especially if its not relevant), hiding text using CSS or javascript - the SE's will pick this up and de-index your site and you'll lose all your rankings.

Another thing you need to be aware of is your competition - how old and established their sites are, how much authority they have etc etc.

If you really want to learn more about this, I suggest you do some reading up on SEO sites - SEOMoz and SEOBook are good examples.

no

Only PR can be passed from page to another not Google rankings. Good keyword placemnet and ethical optimizng helps you.

Having a top ranking doesn't mean a lot in and of itself. It's a matter of how much competition you have for that ranking. After all, anyone can gain a top ranking for a unique ten-word sentence, searched for in quotation marks.

But if you're ranking well for a fairly competitive keyword phrase, it's probably because of more than just content on the page. That is, you're probably being helped by some links pointing to the page. If that's the case, then the page that's ranking well probably has a pretty good PageRank (that's real PageRank -- not what you see in the useless toolbar display).

If that's the case (lots of ifs here), then you can potentially boost the pages you choose a little bit by taking some control over how the well-ranking pages distribute their PR. Obviously, make sure that you're linking to the pages you want to help, with their keywords in the anchor text if possible. You can also either remove links to other pages, or add rel="nofollow" to those links. That way, the PR being distributed by the linking page will only be sent to the pages linked without the nofollow, thus increasing their share of the PR being distributed.

It won't make a big difference, but it may help a bit.

perhaps yes.

why are your number #1 pages #1? If they are number one because they have a good bit of PR passed into them from outside pages then reworking the internal linkjuice 'could' work. If your pages are #1 because there is a void in the competition and your copy best fits the keyword search then I doubt not.

With PR tinkering, it never works for me however, no matter how much I do the PR math on link juice management. I tend to get better results the old fashion way by banging out more quality content and getting new links.

If you think your pages could benefit from basic improvements in link structure and tagging, then experiment a little. I would add caution to the desire to tinker too much with your #1 pages. Don't radically change copy to the point of changing the page meaning if you have quality inbound links and don't link to pages of unrelated topics.
