How do you exclude a website domain in a google search?

I would like to do a google search, but want to exclude certain websites from bringing back results. How do i do this?

(type here what you are searching) -(then type here the website that you want to exclude)

ex.
friends -www.friendster.com

i've tried it many times..
and it works

Use google's advanced search:
http://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search

Set it up so that it excludes results within a certain domain.
