I just got internet for my laptop, but is doesn't work. What could be wrong?

I did a ping test thing. All 4 pings came back, and no information is lost. So I'm contected. I did the proxy settings, and it was blank, so I followed the instructions, and put 192.168.0.1 as the IP address, this was what is said on the top line of DNS servers. (I think that is right). I put 80 in the next block, because I found out that is usually the number that goes in there. Nothing worked there. I set all my setting to orginal mircosoft settings hoping that would help, nothing. I have http:www.yahoo.com/ as the main page. I got that one set right after several tries.
I am in Iraq, and right now I'm using a public computer at the internet/phone center. I can check this question in a few hours and write down intructions. Nobody in my area knows anything, their internet works and that is all they know. Of course they volunteered to play around with it. Make it worse thay mean. I can do that on my own. I hope this is enough for someone who is good with computers, thank you

1. check your firewall...U can turn it off
2. check if your ip is right
