What is the meaning of pentium 3 and pentium 4?

They dont really have a meaning, they're just model names. "Pentium" is Intel's brand name and the "3" or "4" just indicates the generation.

Prior to moving to the "Core2" moniker, this was how they labeled their chips. Beginning with the "Pentium", "Pentium II", then "Pentium III" and "Pentium IV"... they eventually moved away with the Pentium "D" and then the current "Core2"dual and quad chips.

Pentium III was manufactured from 1999 -> 2003.
They ran from 450mhz -> 1400mhz (1.4ghz)

They used socket 1 and socket 370

Pentium 4 was manufactured from 2000-2008 (production ceasing soon)

runs socket 478 and socket 775 (the current socket) although if you get a really old one it'll probably use socket 423.
Don't worry about that too much, the socket numbers are just identifiers to see which motherboards are compatible with the processors (useful if you're upgrading the cpu)

anyway needless to say, they're both obsolete now, intel is no longer making them, instead they're making the core 2 as a pentium replacement.

They are micro-processor (which is used for Computer). They are made by Intel. They are single core processor. Pentium 4 is better than pentium III. Nowadays processor uses dual or qual core, like Pentium D, Core 2 Quad etc. Personally I prefer AMD if I am used Single or Dual Core but when Quad Core arives AMD still can't beat the Intel Quad Core technology. AMD uses real quad core processor while Intel uses 2+2=Quad Core Processor (It is still in a processor).
