Can you change your IP address?

First off, I am completely aware of WEP, but i do not want to set it up. However, I do want to block unauthorized IP addresses that are trying to access the internet through my router. I was able to set up a block through the router software, but I am wondering if a user would be able to easily bypass this. I do know that people can download special software that will change their IP address for them, but the only people that live near me are the average user with no extensive knowledge in computers. I am just wondering if in a normal circumstance, if the computer will somehow change the IP address automatically....Thanks for all inputs.

If you are using an ISP - they assign a temporary IP address to you through their DHCP servers. This is called a 'lease'. Typically one week of time. You can however, manually change your IP through the command prompt - but the IP is still assigned by the ISP.
The best thing that you can do for your wireless security is MAC filtering. Find out your MAC address for each computer on your network - in the command prompt window - type ipconfig. This will list your IP address as well as the MAC address. Write them all down.
Access your router and use MAC filtering (probably in the advanced features) type in the MAC addresses there - now these are the ONLY computers that will be using your network.
It's not possible
Use MAC filtering, it's a wee bit harder to spoof a MAC address, especially for the average user. Or, if your router acts as a DHCP server, just set it up to hand out the same number of IP addresses as number of PCs are in your home. If you have 3 computers, set it up so that there is only a range of 3 addresses handed out.

like:
192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.4

If all of your computers are always on, then no more addresses could be handed out..
if you are behind a router and have a set number of devices using your router you can set the DHCP to limit the devices.

For instance 5 devices, set DHCP to send only 5 IPs 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.6

Set IPs for each device. You can also change the default LAN IP address
not that way, but it is possible just contact your isp.
If you're like most of us with a leased IP address all you have to do is unplug your modem for 2 hours and that ip will be released when you reboot the modem. Once the modem is down runt he repair feature on your lan connection, this will empty the arp table clearing out all your networking settings. Then after the 2 hours make sure your computer is down, reboot the modem/router then wait 2 or 3 minutes and power up your computer. Wait for a few minutes then open a command prompt and type in ipconfig /release, then run ipconfig /renew, you should have a new wan ip.
