Can a notebook pc use the internet from a cable modem? |
If so what are the requirements? Well you can set up a wireless home network so that your laptop can connect to the internet in your house wirelessly. You can be anywhere in your house and get a wireless signal to your laptop so that you can use the internet. You will need a desktop computer. You will need to have either DSL or Cable Internet. You will need a router. Connect the router to the back of your desktop computer. Then connect the cable internet modem or DSL modem to the back of your router. Your laptop will access the wireless signal from your router following the previous setup. If you need help purchasing a router, I suggest going to Best Buy to buy one. A good brand is Netgear or Linksys for about $80.00 or less. Just plug-in the USB Cable from the modem to the computer. yea you need a router if you plan on using a desktop and a laptop on the net at the same time. the laptop will require a eithernet jack if you want a wired connection most laptops withing the past 5 years has one most newer laptops have a wireless card which is how most people connect there laptops if you have a wifi card you will need a wifi router yeah, it's the same thing as connecting it to a desktop pc. if it's just for one computer, you can plug it in directly to the router. if it's for more than one computer, you will need a router. Read in the tutorial section if you have any question don't hesitate to post: http://www.custom-computerz.com/forums/... yes it can, some new modems are usb2.0 make sure the laptop has a usb2.0 port. Windows xp laptops should not have a problem installing easy, other operating system may need special drivers that can be download from the internet. Pentium 3 and above should handle cable internet easy. Have fun! Here's what you need to make your laptop work wirelessly with your cable modem. First, make sure you have a wireless network adapter (either built in the laptop) or a card purchased separately. These usually cost anywhere from $20 to $50. You also need a wireless router that plugs into the cable modem. It will split the single from your cable modem to anything plugged directly into the router as well as anything connected to it wirelessly. The wireless routers typically cost $80 to about $150. Most routers have simple setup instructions illustrating how to configure them, but fail to mention security. Please make sure you secure your router so that your neighbors don't get on your network. Some cable modems won't work when moved to another device (i.e. currently connected to a desktop PC and reconnected to the router). Unplug the modem from the power for at least two minutes and it will hopefully allow connections from your wireless laptop and existing PC. I hope this helps and good luck!! |
