I need (Detailed) steps on how to install DD-WRT onto my WRT54GS Linksys Router. HELP!!!?

I need really detailed steps like download (Insert detailed name here). Not download (Insert name here) when there is like 5 different versions and releases. I have a WRT54GS Linksys router and it says my version of router is 1.0 (On it). It has 4.71.1 on the Web GUI. I looked on Google and can't find much that are really detailed. I really need help because the other tutorials say to download the micro version or something like it and say to get the latest. I checked the website to download it and there are SP1 and SP2 and etc. version and don't know exactly which. Please help, I am pretty new to Router Firmware Flashing and don't want a Bricked Router.

To Chris C. I thought Linksys didn't want people hacking their Routers??? Isn't that why they released Firmware Version 5.0 and 6.0 etc.??Those firmwares have less memory and can't use DD-WRT.

I can help:

First, make sure that your WRT54GS is version between v1.0 and v4.0 (check the label on the bottom). If it isn't, I would go get another router. I won't go into detail on this anymore.

If it is: download the .bin file that corresponds with the version you need (I would recommend v24 RC5 as it is the best balance of stable and feature rich) You can download it here:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads...

That is the standard version. You can find the other specialized versions here:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php?...

Once you have that, you need to disconnect your computer (that you have this file on) and connect it to the new router DIRECTLY (ethernet cable).

Then go to "Firmware update" in the linksys menus (I assume you know how to get there) and select the file you've downloaded. "Apply".

After doing this wait a few minutes. The router will reboot. After this hapens, you need to reset the settings by:
1 unplug the router
2. hold down the "reset" button on the back of the router.
3. plug in the router (while still holding the button for 30 seconds).

You will now have a fresh installation of DD-WRT with default settings (default username: root, passwd: admin.

54GS is a robust router and shouldn't have ANY problems with this simple method.

Points for this long answer?? Thx!!!

Sweet! I hope you find it as useful as I do! Report It

that's what tech support is for. why don't you call linksys
