RAM heat spreaders? how does it work?

when are Memory heat spreaders been invented?
does it help your Ram to have a longer lifetime?
what are the PROS and CONS of using them?

heat spreader only spread heat evenly, they do not necessarily help cooling

most modern high quality RAM comes with them cause they look cool. you can print all sort of catch logo and art on the heat spreader.

if you want good cooling, get some of the high end RAM such as corsiar dominator or something like that. you can tell that its a heat sink because there are fins on top of it. those fins may help in dissipating heat, so its a heatsink

heat spreader are only one flat piece of metal, it can hardly dissipate any heat.

if your RAM comes with it, fine. If not, its pointless to install one. you'll only void your RAM lifetime warranty

Life wise they last you long enough for a replacement, so like 10 yrs or so(ball parkin it)

Pros: Higher overclock on memory, better heat disappation

Cons: Can get bulky making it hard to cable and whatnot through that part of the case
