MY CD DRIVE is not spinning?

My computer's Cd drive has a problem. it accepts cd's but wont read them. i have figured that the lens comes on, but the cd does not spin. Can i use an electric motor to spin the cd, so that it can be functional again, if i can, at what speed should i spin the disc.

i dont want to buy a new one. i love my cd rom. it can read cd's at 8x speed. i bought it on FEb 1st, 1997.

Wow, 11 years for a computer peripheral is about 110 years for a person! I'm surprised you haven't replaced it by now.

I'm sorry to say but it is probably, almost certainly, beyond its peak performance days. I'm sure its seen better days but there is good news.

These days it is actually cheaper to throw away and buy a new CD-ROM drive than it is to actually repair it. If you can find stand alone CD-ROM drives (Most will be CD Burners or combo CD/DVD-ROM burners) they can be had for around $10 at any computer store (Best Buy, Circuit City, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com).

But if you must know a CD spins at regular speed of 462 RPMs (revolutions per minute), so your 8x reader is spinning at 3696 RPMs, and terminal velocity is between 23,000 and 30,000 RPMs

just get a new one. their pretty cheap.

just replace the Rom

don't be rediculous. if its that old you got your moneys worth. get the fastest you can find, its worth it.

Well then you should run it at 8x, which is 4000RPM.... but the new drives can run 52x and you will definially notice a difference

lol i like ur details section.. funny.. get a DL dvd burner at least... shouldnt exceed 30 bucks.. :D
